(This is an edited version of Joe LaPlante's story in the current Valley Breeze)The valedictorian for North Providence High School's Class of 2009 is Bethany Imondi.
Imondi is The Breeze's high school correspondent
She credited her parents for her success as a student.
"My parents have always served as my biggest motivators," she said. "Their support is what inspired me to work so hard in the school. My dad has shared his passion for reading with me, and his job as a paralegal has promoted my interest in pursuing a career in the legal profession. It was my mom who initially encouraged me to submit writing samples to The Breeze in order to be considered to be a high school correspondent. If I am ever unsure of something, I know I can always go to my mom for questions and honest feedback."
Imondi has been a member of the academic decathlon team for four years. She won four medals: two golds in speech, gold in interview, and one for highest overall team scorer.¬ ¬
She was a member of the newspaper for three years, and editor-in-chief in her senior year. She worked as a columnist and correspondent for The Breeze during her junior and senior years in high school.
She was a member of the mock trial team for four years, and captain for the past two years.
She was a member of Science Olympiad during her junior year.
She has taken honors classes for the past two years and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Imondi will attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in the fall, pursuing a major in government.
Earning the valedictorian designation for maintaining the highest grade point average in the class is "a real honor," she said. "This accomplishment is worth all the effort I put into the past four years, and in that time I have matured greatly. Even though doing well academically has certainly been a priority, high school has taught me that enjoying the entire experience is equally important. My success in the classroom has depended upon the great encouragement of my family and friends."
Beth will address the North Providence High School Class of 2009 at graduation ceremonies on June 16, at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence.
(Beth and her family are parishioners at MMM. Congratulations Beth! The Jesuits better take good care of you during your years at Georgetown!)
