The National Conference of Catholic Bishops has an excellent website where you can stay current on all kinds of topics. Instead of reading snippets from the newspapers about matters the National Conference has commented upon, read the whole text for yourself!
The website also provides the readings for each Sunday Mass. Look at the readings before Mass and see if the homily you would preach is better than the one the preacher gives!
